Waterfront FAQs
1. What About Hurricanes?

The news tends to blow hurricanes out of proportion in this area. In truth, major hurricanes don't come along that often. Still, when they do, the coastal authorities take every precaution to ensure that the area is secure.

2. Is there a big problem with beach erosion around the coastal properties?

Well, that question is answerable in two ways. On the one hand, erosion generally depends on Mother Nature, and the ends of any of the region's islands generally erode and are repaired by beach renourishment. In the middle of the islands, however, erosion is slower, and you might even gain beach. If this is a particularly important concern for you, look at sound front or intracoastal properties.

3. Can Bunnie Find Out about Home Owner Association Dues and Taxes?

Of course! She's on the HOA at Figure Eight Island, and can give you exacting advice about dues, assessments and reassessments. She'd also tell you to keep in mind that property tax is reassessed every 9 years, and every time a house is sold.

4. How are the area's schools?

The area's schools are awesome. New Hanover is home to four high schools and several elementary and middle schools that are perfect for you and your child's best interest.

5. Is Wilmington Just a Tourist City?

No. Quite to the contrary, Wilmington is North Carolina's largest port, and it's one of the largest on the east coast. That means big business and healthy commerce for the entire area. Also, Wilmington has a culture all it's own. Unlike many beach communities along the southeast coast, Wilmington is never a ghost town relying on the tourism to stay alive. There is plenty to do year-round for everyone!

6. Is Wilmington Just for Retirees?

The Wilmington area is a wonderful choice for retirees. Still, the same reasons that make Wilmington desirable for retirees also makes it a perfect place for raising a family; good schools, lower taxes, great climate. The entire area is a great place for a person of any age to live!

7. How is the Airport?

ILM, located off the Martin Luther King, Jr. bypass, conveniently located near downtown and the beaches. It has direct flights to many major cities. It's a full-service airport! Plus, there is a private airport, AirWilmington, that uses the same air strip.
